She has two books coming out very soon, Pray For Dawn and Wait for Dusk, Coming out end of June and end of July respectively. I can’t wait!
Giveaway deets, at the bottom of the post =)
Now, on with the interview… Enjoy:
Larissa: When did you first start writing?
Jocelynn Drake: I actually first started writing stories when I was 12. I spent the summer reading this great re-telling of the Robin Hood story, but I was left feeling like something was missing. So I spent the rest of the summer re-writing the story of Robin Hood in a beaten up notebook so that it included a kick-ass heroine that could hang with the guys. From that point on, I just kept writing and have never looked back.
Larissa: Have you always enjoyed Fantasy?
Jocelynn Drake: I love fantasy. I have loved fantasy since I read my first fantasy novel back in high school and have always dreamed of writing a traditional fantasy novel with elves, dwarves, and dragons. For me, it’s the ultimate escape and the best place to stretch my imagination.
Larissa: Why write Urban Fantasy?
Jocelynn Drake: Urban fantasy is a great combination of the real world with fantastic elements. I love putting magic and amazing creatures in real-life settings. It’s my way of turning expectations for the world on their ear. It’s a easy way of making comment on society without being overly serious. For me, urban fantasy is just fun!
Larissa: Were there any Books, Movies or Writers that have inspired you?
Jocelynn Drake: I love Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula, as well as The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde.. Those are some of my early influences. Other writers that I love include Kim Harrison, Rachel Vincent, Raymond Feist, Neil Gaiman, and Vicki Pettersson.
Larissa: What is your favorite subject in the Urban Fantasy Realm?
Jocelynn Drake: I will always have a special place in my heart for vampires. I love their power, sexual allure, and the struggle between their former humanity and the new society pressure of being a vampire.
Larissa: I just love the chemistry between Mira and Danaus! Any chance we'll get to finally see them get together?
Jocelynn Drake: You want me to give away one of my best secrets?!?! Let’s just say that I have worked very hard to keep their relationship development as natural as possible considering that the two characters started out the series hating each other. Both Mira and Danaus are old and stubborn creatures, while the books in the series happen over a very short time frame. But, I promise that things will heat up very soon. :)
Larissa: The fourth book in the series, Pray for Dawn, is told through a new point of view. What made you decide to have Danaus be the master of this book?
Jocelynn Drake: While Mira has told the story in the first three books in the series, I’ve always considered Danaus a main character. I have always wanted to tell a book from his point of view since he is such a strong character. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen until book 4 because I needed to get a few things settled with the naturi first. Pray for Dawn was best told from Danaus’s point of view because we take a closer look at his past and battle an interesting new creature.
Larissa: Favorite Paranormal themed Movie?
Jocelynn Drake: The Underworld series, particularly Underworld
Larissa: Favorite Paranormal themed TV Show?
Jocelynn Drake: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Larissa: Favorite Paranormal themed Book?
Jocelynn Drake: There are far too many to try to choose from
Larissa: Favorite Author?
Jocelynn Drake: Again, far too many to choose from. Some of my top favorites are: Kim Harrison, Rachel Vincent, Vicki Pettersson, Raymond Feist, Charlaine Harris, Christine Feehan, Jim Butcher, Simon Green
Larissa: Favorite Paranormal Romance Author?
Jocelynn Drake: I don’t read as much paranormal romance as I do urban fantasy, but I think my favorite at the moment is Christine Feehan’s Carpathian series.
Larissa: Favorite one of your Books?
Jocelynn Drake: Favorite of the books that I’ve written. At the moment, of the finished books, Pray for Dawn is my favorite. I loved writing from Danaus’s point of view.
Larissa: Who is your favorite of your own characters?
Jocelynn Drake: Mira will always be my favorite character. I love her personality. She’s impulsive, sarcastic, and determined with a hot temper. I also love her struggle to find a balance between her former human morals and her vampire society requirements. She’s a lot of fun to write.
Larissa: Which was the hardest to write?
Jocelynn Drake: There is a minor character that appeared in Dawnbreaker and is making another appearance in Book 6 by the name of Shelly that has been the hardest to write. She is an extremely cheerful, optimistic character. Her personality is exactly opposite of mine in many ways.
Larissa: What would you be if not a writer?
Jocelynn Drake: I would be a stock market analyst. I love the financial market with all the twists and turns of Wall Street. It’s actually what I do for a dayjob. I love writing articles about the stock market because there’s always something interesting going on.
Larissa: Coffee or Tea?
Jocelynn Drake: Iced Tea
Larissa: Up or Down?
Jocelynn Drake: Down
Larissa: Virtual or Real?
Jocelynn Drake: Virtual
Larissa: Right or Left?
Jocelynn Drake: Left
Larissa: Vampires or Werewolves?
Jocelynn Drake: Vampires
Larissa: Vampires or The Naturi?
Jocelynn Drake: Vampires
Larissa: Angels or Demons?
Jocelynn Drake: Demons
Larissa: Friends or Seinfeld?
Jocelynn Drake: Friends
Larissa: Rolling Stones or The Beatles?
Jocelynn Drake: The Beatles
Larissa: Reading or Writing?
Jocelynn Drake: Writing
Larissa: What is your favorite part of the writing process?
Jocelynn Drake: I love the actual writing of the books, watching the scenes unfold and the surprises that characters treat me to.
Larissa: What is your least favorite part?
Jocelynn Drake: My least favorite part is plotting out the book before I write it. It’s sometimes very hard to imagine the entire book from start to finish without actually having the chance to write out some of the scenes. I don’t permit myself to do any writing until the entire book has been outlined.
Larissa: The Dark Days Series in your own words?
Jocelynn Drake: The Dark Days Series follows a nightwalker and a nightwalker hunter that are forced to work together to stop a dark race of nature-bound creatures from destroying the human race in an effort to protect the earth.
Larissa: Any plans for more Books in the series?
Jocelynn Drake: I am currently contracted for six books in the series, but I am hoping that there will be more. Keep your fingers crossed.
Larissa: What is coming up next for you?
Jocelynn Drake: 2010 is going to be a busy year! Pray for Dawn is due out in late June, while book 5 – Wait for Dusk—will be released in late July. I will be attending the RomanticTimes Booklovers Convention, the Romance Writers of America Convention, and the San Diego ComiCon. At the same time, I will be finishing up the initial draft of book 6 in the Dark Days series. So please, pick up a book or come and see me.
Larissa: What are you working on right now?
Jocelynn Drake: I am currently working on the sixth book in the Dark Days Series. There is no official title or release date yet.
Larissa: Do you have any advice or tip to those like me that want to become a published Author someday?
Jocelynn Drake: Some of the best advice that I have received came from a writer friend of mine. She said to write like you’ve already got the contract. Write everyday and stay focused. That way you will develop a strong discipline for hitting your goals as well as becoming a stronger writer.
Larissa: Anything you would like to say to your fans out there?
Jocelynn Drake: For the fans of the Dark Days Series, I would just like to say thank you for all your love and support. Mira and Danaus are forever locked in my heart and it has been a great privilege to share them with you. I am so glad that you have let them into your homes.
Larissa: Thank you so much for being here!
