I feel so lucky to have been a part of the original Harry Potter craze. I feel lucky to have found out and fallen in love with the series right when book came out. I am lucky that my dad gave me the first 3 books as a xmas present (in Portuguese) and I read all of them in three days, with no sleep. I am lucky that my dad gave in and surprised me with an English copy of book 4 on the forth day and I didn’t sleep for another two days.

That was a life altering moment for me. As I have said before, I have always loved reading, but the HP series opened up a new world for me. A world full of magic where anything could happen. That was when my love for Fantasy started and I will always be thankful to J.K. for that.

I remember pre-ordering the following books even 6 months in advance. I remember reading them in the first day I got them and even reading it when my students were doing exams. I remember pouring through theories and articles on HP fan sites. I remember crying like a baby when Sirius died. I remember crying, but accepting the nee of it when Dumbledore died.

The HP series where the first series, ever, that I felt like re-reading. I read each book 3 or 4 times and my love for it is unconditional. I just know that even when Im 40, I’ll still be mooning over this series. I might like the movies, but it will never come close to my love for the books.

Thank you J.K. for creating such a magical and inspiring world, with characters that we can’t help but love. You changed me and my life and I will always remember that.

Author Appreciation Week [Day #2] – L.J. Smith

8 Lovely Comments!

Even though I have always loved reading, my complete and utter obsession with it started at the end of 2008 with the Twilight Saga. After my 5th read of the series in a row, I went on a crusade to find more authors and series in this genre that has such a great draw for me.

I came across an online article about a books series called “Vampire Diaries” that was being made into a TV show. Since I prefer to read the original before seeing a version on TV or the movies, I went after and got the Vampire Diaries Series.

I was hooked! I read the 4 books in the series non-stop and right after that i found out that L.J. had written some other trilogies and another longer series. That was how I found myself immersed in the world of L.J. Smith.

I LOVE her books so much! I don’t know how to explain what it is about her that is so amazing, but she has a way with telling a story and captivating you until the end and always leaving you wanting more.

I’ve read all trilogies and also her Night World series and I find it funny that The Vampire Diaries is her most famous series, because in my opinion that is not even close her best one. I feel that her Dark Visions, Secret Circle and Forbidden Game series are utterly over looked. They are such amazing trilogies, with such original and awesome stories that it kills me that not more people talk about it.

All these series were written before the year 2000 and recently she has started a new trilogy in the Vampire Diaries world and the last book in the Night World series has still to come out.

L.J. Smith is amongst my favorite authors of all times, those that are an immediate and unarguably buy for me. If you haven’t read her other trilogies yet, I urge to check them out, they are really wonderful!

I was really happy to see that almost all of her previous books and series have been released and that the trilogies have come out in omnibus binding, making it even easier and cheaper to get them.

Check out the old and new cover for the Vampire Diaries Series and The Night World series:

Author Appreciation Week [Day #1] – Agatha Christie, The Mystery Queen

11 Lovely Comments!

Agatha-Christie1012

When I think about the beginning of my career as a reader, there are many books in my childhood that come to mind. But when I track down the start of my reading addiction and obsession, Agatha Christie is definitely the main star.

I remember browsing the local used bookstore for every single book of hers I could find, asking the owner to call me when something more showed up and after a long while I was able to gather 84 of her 85 books. I cannot remember which book is the one missing for me to read.

I remember spending hours and days in bed with her books, reading like crazy and going through 4 or even 5 books a weekend. Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, who is my favorite Detective EVER, were such a part of my earlier youth, their thirst for solving a mystery, their quirky and lovable personalities and amazingly compelling storylines.

I remember reading about these people from the 20s, 30s and feeling that even though there’s been over 50 years since then, the social commentary and problems have not changed that much. I remember realizing that human nature is human nature and it doesn’t matter if you are a 30s Hollywood starlet or a old biddy in a small town, if you’re from the 20s or from the 21st century.

Agatha Christie helped me realize all that and because of that and because if it wasn’t for her books I am sure my reading obsession wouldn’t be the same, I thank her for being there and for being the amazing writing she was.
