BE Interview: Jackie Morse Kessler

0 Lovely Comments!

Just the other night, Jackie (Literary Escapism) and I had the extreme pleasure of interviewing Jackie Morse Kessler, who will be releasing the third novel in her Riders of the Apocalypse series, Loss. This fabulous series not only tackles real life problems, but spins it through a supernatural tale that captivates the reader. If that doesn’t convince you to read this series, then how about the knowledge that proceeds from the sale of each novel goes to charity? Loss focuses on Billy Ballard, the most bullied kid in school, and how he is tricked into becoming the new Pestilence.

Fifteen-year-old Billy Ballard is the kid that everyone picks on, from the school bullies to the teachers. But things change drastically when Death tells Billy he must stand in as Pestilence, the White Rider of the Apocalypse. Now armed with a Bow that allows him to strike with disease from a distance, Billy lashes out at his tormentors…and accidentally causes an outbreak of meningitis. Horrified by his actions, Billy begs Death to take back the Bow. For that to happen, says Death, Billy must track down the real White Rider—who is lost in his memories.
In his search, Billy travels through White Rider’s life: from ancient Phrygia, where the man called King Mita agrees to wear the White Rider’s Crown, to Sherwood Forest, where Pestilence figures out how to cheat Death; from the docks of Alexandria, where cartons of infested grain are being packed onto a ship that will carry the plague, to the Children’s Crusade in France—all the way to what may be the end of the world. When Billy finally finds the White Rider, the teen convinces the man to return to the real world.
But now the insane White Rider plans to unleash something awful on humanity—something that could make the Black Death look like a summer cold. Billy has a choice: he can live his life and pretend he doesn’t know what’s coming, or he can challenge the White Rider for his Crown. Does one bullied teenager have the strength to stand his ground—and the courage to save the world?

Jackie and I talked to Jackie for a good hour about the Riders and even a little Jezzie (for those who are familiar with her Hell on Earth series). So be prepared to listen for a little bit. *grin*

Jackie Morse Kessler

Meet Jackie Morse Kessler!
Jackie Morse Kessler grew up in Brooklyn, NY, with a cranky cat and overflowing shelves filled with dolls and books. Now she’s in Upstate NY with another cranky cat, a loving husband, two sons, and overflowing shelves filled with dragons and books (except when her sons steal her dragons). She has a bachelor’s degree in English and American Literature, and yet she’s never read any Jane Austen (with or without zombies). She also has a master’s degree in media ecology. (The living study of technology and culture. Which is cool, but she still can’t figure out how to use Tweetdeck.)
Jackie spends a lot of time writing, reading, and getting distracted by bright and shiny new ideas. (She just came up with a new idea right now.) She has a weakness for chocolate and a tendency to let her cat take over her office chair.

Giveaway & Book Journey Feature: Gabriel’s Inferno by Sylvain Reynard

26 Lovely Comments!

Gabriel's Inferno

Professor Gabriel Emerson, a specialist in Dante and the art of seduction, believes he has already earned his exile to the lower circles of hell. Since redemption is impossible, there is no reason to refrain from indulging in a life of pleasurable sin, using his notorious good looks and sophisticated charm as a means to gratify his every whim. But when he meets Julia Mitchell, a brilliant, lovely, and innocent grad student with the achingly familiar eyes of an angel, all of his cynical convictions are challenged. Her mysterious allure and the havoc she wreaks on his self-satisfied existence cause him to lash out at her, while her quiet beauty and innate goodness consistently undermine his control, tempting him beyond measure. Despite surviving a traumatic childhood, nothing has shaken Julia's faith that redemption is possible for everyone-everyone but her. Her unworthiness torments her, since the only man she will ever love has managed to forget her very existence, failing to even recognize her when they reconnect. Too naive to see that Gabriel's hostility is a mask for his increasing obsession with her, Julia forces him to come to grips with his past while she continues to unwittingly torment his senses. His fascination grows into a dangerous preoccupation, for Julia is forbidden fruit . . .

Book Journey Feature: Renfield Syndrome {Rhiannon's Law #2} by J.A. Saare

0 Lovely Comments!

This Month

The Renfield Syndrome (Rhiannon's Law, #2)

Vampires, and werewolves, and demons, oh my.
Rhiannon thought facing off against a deranged child vampire was the most dangerous task she would ever have to undertake, but she’s about to discover making a deal with a demon is far, far worse. Sent forward into another reality, one in which vampires are now dominating nearly extinct humans, she realizes the sooner she returns to her vampire lover, Disco, the better.
Unfortunately, time changes a lot of things; including those most trusted around her. When she’s faced with a loss and betrayal unlike any she has ever known, her focus shifts from severing the debt between the demon that wants to kill her, to exacting a revenge that will bring forth consequences she never could have fathomed. By reaching out to the darkness lingering within her, she’ll find the strength to push forward despite the circumstances that would see her dead and buried.
After all, when it’s all said and done, all that she has left to lose is her soul

Black Gold (Takhini Wolves #1)

Their wolves are howling at the moon. Their human halves are on different planets.

Takhini Wolves, Book 1

Lone wolf Shaun Stevens’s automatic response to the words “happily ever after”? Kill me now. Yet with all his friends settling down he’s begun to think there may actually be something to this love-and-roses crap.

One thing’s for sure: his dream mate will have to out-cuss, out-spit and out-hike him. So he never expected the one to push his forever button would be a blue-blooded Southern debutante with a voice as dark and velvety as her skin.

When Gemmita Jacobs steps off the plane in Whitehorse, Yukon, it’s about more than her caribou research project. It’s her declaration of independence from an overprotected upbringing. Except there’s something in the air she can’t quite define—something that unexpectedly rouses her mating instincts.

Moments after their eyes lock, the deed is done—and done thoroughly. When the pheromone dust settles, though, all the reasons they don’t belong together become painfully clear.

It’s enough to make a wolf learn a whole new set of cuss words…

Warning: Two strong wolves getting exactly what they deserve. Includes wilderness nookie, shifters being naughty in public places, the Midnight Sun as a canopy for seduction and grizzly shifters on the loose. Oh, and don’t forget the sarcasm.

From Goodreads.

    EXCERPT:

"Shaun stepped around her slowly, savouring the ability to run his hands over her body. The soft caress of her dark skin. The way his hand contrasted with hers. But more than the difference in their colouring, it was the ripple of goose bumps that rose behind his touch that drew his attention.

“Cold?” he pressed his lips against her upper arm.

“Hot. Crazy hot. Like I’m on fire and you’re pouring on gasoline—oh…”

He licked her. A small, intimate touch as he held her in place. Another lick, this time lower. On the back of her arm. The next higher, at the ticklish spot where her arm met her body.

He tugged her bra strap to the side, letting the elastic fall away. More kisses followed, his actions repeated on the other side. Then he nuzzled her neck as he undid her bra and
    removed it completely.

    She shivered.

Shaun pressed his naked chest to her back, the heat from both their bodies burning hotter than a blowtorch. Over her shoulder he admired her, the firm swells of her breasts, the slender curve of her waist. He teased her skin with tiny circles, starting at her hipbones, drawing his hands higher and higher. Dusting along her ribcage, skimming the underside of her breasts, caressing her collarbone.

Not one part of her upper body was neglected. Not one part was ignored, but nowhere received more than a brief caress before he moved on.

He was memorizing her. This would be etched into his memory forever.

Gem moaned as he cupped her breasts. “Feels so good.”

    “More?”

She nodded, leaning her weight on him. Her ass brushed his jeans, and the tight control he’d maintained nearly snapped. He ached.

Licking her nape was the only thing that calmed his wolf enough he could get the snap on

her pants undone. “I like these, by the way.”

She laughed. “Wearing pants feels as if I’m in a disguise.”

He eased the zipper down, peeled the material off her hips. “No disguise, just being smart. These are what you’ll need in the backcountry.”

    “So I’m not insane?”

“Right.” He froze, only relaxing when she wiggled with laughter.

    “Sorry, couldn’t resist.”

Neither could he. Shaun dropped to his knees behind her and nipped her butt cheek.

    “Oh, what—?”

“Love the pants, love what’s in them even more.”

She smiled at him, and he was ready to do anything for her.

It took a long, long time to strip her. Every article of clothing he removed required him to lick and taste all the new exposed skin. By the time she was completely naked, he’d brought her close to orgasm with his fingers, his tongue, always stopping just before she gained release.

When he picked her up and laid her on the bed, her wolf was rumbling in pleasure.

Shaun paused to strip the rest of his clothing off, then crawled next to her, careful to push her hair aside. He looked her in the eye and let his fingers drop to her sex. Felt the wetness there. Used it to rub and caress until she shook. All the while he watched her. Saw her pupils change, her breathing hitch. She closed her eyes and her sheath squeezed around him, and he smiled.

    It was only the beginning.

    ABOUT THE NORTH –Part Two

Hi again! Wow, the blog we’re visiting is in Brazil, and I’m going to be talking about the north. Like in the far far far north this time. Get ready for a loooooong trip!

The Takhini Wolves and Granite Lake are set in the north, and I thought it would be cool (heheh) to talk about exactly how remote this area is. The northern parts of Canada, US, Greenland, Russia, Scandinavia are BIG. As in really BIG. I think this is made more apparent by how isolated and empty a lot of the space really is. People do live there, though, and animals. And there’s a lot of resources such as oil, and even fresh water that makes these parts of the world not only great places for stories, but important to the
    world.

I think shifters would love to live some of these places. Think about it—far enough away from civilization they could be more open about their dual natures, and yet with the resources to proved an income so their human sides could enjoy a living as well. The best of both worlds, and one of the reasons I set my Granite Lake and Takhini series in the far
    north.

In BLACK GOLD, the heroine Gem is coming from a bit of an isolated background as well, only she’s used to living in the middle of a far more populated area. There’s a good reason for her to be sheltered, but coming to the north is a hug adventure for her. Just imagine. When you’re out hiking in some parts of the Yukon, you could literally walk for
    days without seeing another person.

One thing that is interesting is that in spite of the remote location, there are people who for one reason or another live far away from everyone else. During the 1950’s a series of small radar stations were set up right along the extreme northern edge of Alaska and the Yukon. It was called the Distant Early Warning Line, or DEW Line. This was in the era of political tension between the then USSR and the United States, and the line was meant to be an eyes and ears to warn if any kind of hostile move was made by going over the arctic cap.

Talk about isolated. The northern edge of the world. Some stations were manned for years before being abandoned or converted into scientific research bases. The extreme weather conditions these stations face means there’s not a lot left of many of them now, over 50 years later.

You want to take a holiday somewhere very very quiet? How about this beautiful spot right on the artic Ocean on Nuvagapak Point?

    You want to visit?

Make sure you leave a comment to be entered for the Grand Prize of $50 gift certificate.

His name is Ares, and the fate of mankind rests on his powerful shoulders. If he falls to the forces of evil, the world falls too. As one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, he is far stronger than any mortal, but even he cannot fight his destiny forever. Not when his own brother plots against him.
Yet there is one last hope. Gifted in a way other humans can't-or won't-understand, Cara Thornhart is the key to both this Horseman's safety and his doom. But involving Cara will prove treacherous, even beyond the maddening, dangerous desire that seizes them the moment they meet. For staving off eternal darkness could have a staggering cost: Cara's life.

    *NO Spoilers

I am a huge Larissa Ione fan. Her Demonica series constantly features on my favorites lists and I can’t recommend them enough to Paranormal Romance fans.

However, when I heard that there would be a spin-off series I was a bit apprehensive. I mean, I loved the Demonica Series characters so much, that nothing could ever compare, right?

I am glad to say that I should have had more faith in the awesomeness that is Larissa Ione. Because, with Eternal Rider she has more than delivered. It does help that some of my favorite secondary characters from the Demonica series show up.

Ares is War, well, he will become one of the Horseman of the Apocalypse known as War, if or when his seal breaks. That means that he needs to do whatever it takes to make sure that does not happen, but what he did not expect was that to keep himself from going evil, he needs to make sure a human woman stays safe and alive.

Cara is human, well, she does have an ability she’d rather not talk about, but she is human and when a hellhound, Aegi hunters and basically the whole supernatural world comes knocking, it’s time to trust Ares or be killed.

Despite being a great Paranormal Romance novel, Eternal Rider is very dark. Larissa has no fear of making her characters go through hell, sometimes literally, to make they reach where they need to be. The journey is amazing and a wild ride I did not want to leave.

Demonica fans will probably love this, specially the cameos in it =) But, if you like your PNR light, this is not for you, yeah, there is some humor, but Eternal Hunter is dark at it’s core and if you’re ready for that, I think you’ll absolutely love it!
